4,614 COVID cases reported in New Taipei, 3,415 in Taichung, and 3,004 in Taoyuan
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 26,943 local COVID cases on Wednesday (July 20).
Chou Ji-haw (周志浩), head of the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control, also confirmed 253 imported cases, bringing the country's total case count to 4,337,076. The 57 deaths reported brought the country's total COVID death toll to 8,318.
Local cases
The local cases include 12,577 males, 14,350 females, and 16 cases still under investigation, ranging in age from under 5 to their 90s. New Taipei City reported the most cases with 4,614, followed by 3,415 in Taichung City, 3,004 in Taoyuan City, 2,751 in Taipei City, 2,703 in Kaohsiung City, 1,979 in Tainan City, 1,236 in Changhua County, 833 in Pingtung County, 761 in Miaoli County, 756 in Hsinchu County, 681 in Yunlin County, 665 in Yilan County, 643 in Hsinchu City, 536 in Hualien County, 519 in Chiayi County, 428 in Nantou County, 411 in Keelung City, 352 in Taitung County, 295 in Chiayi City, 185 in Kinmen County, 141 in Penghu County, and 35 in Lienchiang County.
COVID deaths
The 57 deaths announced on Wednesday include 32 males and 25 females ranging in age from their 40s to their 90s. All of these individuals were classified as severe cases, 54 had a history of chronic disease, and 37 had not received their third dose of a COVID vaccine. Their dates of diagnosis ranged from May 18 to July 17 and the dates of death were from June 23 to July 18.
Imported cases
The 253 imported cases include 150 males and 103 females ranging in age from under 5 to their 70s. Between June 21 to July 19, eight arrived from the U.S., three from the U.K., two each from Turkey and Vietnam, and one each from Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. The countries of origin of 234 other cases are still being investigated.
COVID case statistics
Since the pandemic began, Taiwan has carried out 14,363,622 COVID tests, with 10,020,309 coming back negative. Of the 4,337,076 confirmed cases, 17,389 were imported, 4,319,633 were local, 36 came from the Navy's "Goodwill Fleet," three from a cargo pilot cluster, one is unresolved, and 14 are under investigation.
Up until now, 8,318 individuals have succumbed to the disease. Of the 8,303 deaths from local infections, 1,879 were in New Taipei City, 984 in Taipei City, 799 in Taichung City, 754 in Kaohsiung City, 632 in Taoyuan City, 624 in Tainan City, 476 in Changhua County, 344 in Pingtung County, 243 in Yunlin County, 236 in Nantou County, 198 in Keelung City, 171 each in Chiayi County and Miaoli County, 167 in Yilan County, 144 in Hualien County, 133 in Chiayi City, 130 in Hsinchu County, 113 in Taitung County, 79 in Hsinchu City, 15 in Penghu County, and 11 in Kinmen County. The 15 other deaths were imported cases.
