Taiwan reports 52,213 local COVID cases, 171 deaths

7,909 COVID cases reported in Taichung, 6,992 in Kaohsiung, and 6,444 in New Taipei


TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) announced 52,246 local COVID cases on Wednesday (June 22), a 7.3% increase from the previous day.

Philip Lo (羅一鈞), deputy head of the CECC's medical response division, also confirmed 33 imported cases, bringing the country's total case count to 3,439,279. The 171 deaths brought the country's total COVID death toll to 5,651.

Local cases

The local cases include 24,760 males, 27,429 females, and 24 cases still under investigation, ranging in age from under 5 to their 90s. Taichung City reported the most cases with 7,909, followed by 6,992 in Kaohsiung City, 6,444 in New Taipei City, 4,841 in Tainan City, 4,680 in Taoyuan City, 3,873 in Changhua County, 3,516 in Taipei City, 2,403 in Pingtung County, 1,617 in Yunlin County, 1,283 in Hsinchu County, 1,226 in Miaoli County, 1,208 in Nantou County, 1,127 in Hsinchu City, 980 in Chiayi County, 980 in Yilan County, 782 in Chiayi City, 739 in Hualien County, 699 in Keelung City, 514 Taitung County, 243 in Penghu County, 118 in Kinmen County, and 39 in Lienchiang County.

COVID deaths

The 171 deaths announced on Wednesday included 117 males and 54 females ranging in age from under five to their 90s. All of these patients were classified as severe cases, 158 had a history of chronic disease, and 111 had not received their third dose of a COVID vaccine. Their dates of diagnosis ranged from May 17 to June 19 and dates of death from May 26 to June 19.

Imported cases

The 33 imported cases included 16 males and 17 females ranging in age from their teens to their 60s. Between June 20 - 21, three arrived from the U.S., two from the Netherlands, and one each from India, China, France, and Switzerland. The country of origin of 24 other imported cases is still being investigated.

COVID case statistics

Since the pandemic began, Taiwan has carried out 12,953,613 COVID tests, with 9,511,036 coming back negative. Of the 3,439,279 confirmed cases, 13,957 were imported, 3,425,268 were local, 36 came from the Navy's "Goodwill Fleet," three from a cargo pilot cluster, one is unresolved, and 14 are under investigation.

Up until now, 5,651 individuals have succumbed to the disease. Of the 5,636 deaths from local infections, 1,554 were in New Taipei City; 839 in Taipei City; 481 in Taichung City; 475 in Taoyuan City; 429 in Kaohsiung City; 321 in Tainan City; 247 in Changhua County; 203 in Pingtung County; 153 in Keelung City; 127 in Yilan County; 124 in Nantou County; 116 in Yunlin County; 97 in Miaoli County; 91 in Hualien County; 86 in Hsinchu County; 83 in Chiayi County; 73 in Taitung County; 70 in Chiayi City; 50 in Hsinchu City, 10 in Kinmen County, and seven in Penghu County. The 15 other deaths were imported cases.
