Nation reports 10 imported COVID cases from 6 countries

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Central Epidemic Command Center (CECC) on Thursday (Sept. 16) reported two new local COVID-19 cases.

Health Minister and CECC head Chen Shih-chung (陳時中) announced 12 new coronavirus cases, including 10 imported and two local ones. The CECC did not announce any deaths, leaving the COVID death toll at 839.

Local cases

The two local cases reported Thursday include No. 16,214, a woman in her 80s. She sought medical treatment for other reasons on Sept. 14 and was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Sept. 16.

Case No. 16,221 is a woman in her 70s who is the owner of the kindergarten at the center of a cluster infection caused by the Delta variant. Due to the outbreak at the kindergarten, the health department arranged for the woman to enter a quarantine center.

Coronavirus tests conducted during and at the end of the quarantine period both came back negative. On Sept. 12, she was released from quarantine. However, on Sept. 14, she began to experience a sore throat and was tested for the virus again.

She tested positive on Sept. 16. Two people have been listed as contacts and have entered quarantine while the health center continues to conduct contact tracing.

Imported cases

According to Chen, the 10 imported cases reported on Thursday include five men and five women between the ages of 20 and 30. Between Aug. 31 and Sept. 14, they entered Taiwan from South Africa (case No. 16,215), the U.S. (case Nos. 16,216, 16,218, 16,219, and 16,223), Japan (case Nos. 16,217 and 16,222), the United Arab Emirates (case No. 16,220), Indonesia (case No. 16,224), and India (case No. 16,225).

COVID case statistics

Since the outbreak began, Taiwan has carried out 3,082,957 COVID tests, with 3,065,218 coming back negative. Out of the 16,115 confirmed cases, 1,488 were imported, 14,573 were local, 36 came from the Navy's "Goodwill Fleet," three were from a cargo pilot cluster, and one was an unresolved case.

A total of 110 people have been removed as confirmed cases, while 14 cases are still under investigation. Up until now, 839 individuals have succumbed to the disease.

Of the 829 deaths from local infections, 411 were in New Taipei; 318 in Taipei; 28 in Keelung; 26 in Taoyuan; 15 in Changhua County; 13 in Hsinchu County; five in Taichung; three in Miaoli County; two each in Yilan and Hualien counties; and one each in Taitung County, Yunlin County, Tainan City, Nantou County, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County. The 10 other deaths were imported cases.
