Revamped awards to revitalize literary community, improve language development and diversity.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The new-look 2021 Taiwan Literature Award is calling for submissions from April 15 and offers prizes of up to NT$3.7 million (US$130,000).

The award is organized by the National Museum of Taiwan Literature. And there are two competition categories: The Golden Award for published books, and the Creative Writing Award for writing in one’s mother tongue.

The idea of the awards is to pay tribute to the many excellent works of literature produced in Taiwan and to encourage the creation of original works. In addition, the hope is that the revamped awards will revitalize the nation’s literary community.

While the Golden Award has been open to any genre since 2019, the Bud Award is a new addition. From 2020, the Creative Writing Award opened up to more genres, including the novel, prose, and poetry. Plays, meanwhile, are recognized every other year.

The Creative Writing Award includes Taiwanese, Hakka, and Chinese for Indigenous Groups, with one winner in each genre. Colleges, universities, and creative writing camps will be encouraged to take part in the competition, which is expected to provide a boost to the national policy of language development and diversity.

There will be two deadlines for submission: The Creative Writing Award is open from April 15 to May 15, while the Golden Award is open from June 1 to July 1.
