Taiwan and Japan heritage railways join up to offer great ticket deals from May 10

台日鐵路從5月10日開始提供互惠優惠票

Enthusiasts can apply for round-trip tickets on the countries’ Alishan Forest Railway and Kurobe Gorge Railway lines

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A series of cooperative activities between Taiwan’s Alishan Forest Railway (阿里山林業鐵路) and Japan's Kurobe Gorge Railway (日本黑部峽谷鐵道) will get underway on May 10 and last through Nov. 30, Taiwan's Forestry Bureau said on Friday (May 3).

The bureau said holders of a one- or two-day Alishan Forest Railway branch line ticket (Chushan, Chaoping, and Shenmu lines) can utilize their used tickets to apply for a free round-trip ticket between Unazuki Onsen and Keyakidaira stations on Kurobe Gorge Railway, 15 days to three months before taking the train.

Likewise, holders of a used Unazuki Onsen-Keyakidaira round-trip ticket can apply for a free one- or two-day Alishan Forest Railway branch line ticket. The two tourism-oriented heritage railways became sister railways in 2013 and have extended benefits to each other for five consecutive years, according to the bureau.

Kurobe Gorge Railway is located in Japan's Toyama Prefecture. The railway is 20.1 kilometers in length, and a one-way train ride takes about one hour and 20 minutes. The railroad line is 762 mm wide, the same as Alishan Forest Railway.

Kurobe Gorge Railway is closed in winter from December every year due to snow and won’t resume operations until May, when snow in Kurobe Gorge melts away.
