Taiwanese women melt over Italian groom's singing of Sunflower Movement protest song


TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- Video of an Italian groom serenading his Taiwanese bride with a Sunflower Movement protest song at their wedding reception has gone viral this week on social media in Taiwan.

On Sept. 29, 2018, an Italian man and a Taiwanese woman who had met in the UK, held a large wedding reception in the groom's home country. To surprise his new bride, the groom took to the stage with a band called MCflys and sang the song "Island's Sunrise," which was composed by the Taiwanese band Fire EX at the height of the Sunflower Student Movement in 2014.

The bride and her Taiwanese bridesmaids soon cheered loudly and broke out in tears as the song conjured the mood at the time and presents an extra layer of difficulty, due to the lyrics being in Taiwanese Dialect.

On Feb. 3 of this year, the groom, who goes by the handle ElanTheBard, uploaded the video to YouTube. In the description, he mentions that he is proud to be "Itaiwanese" and thanked the band MCflys for helping to pull off the song with only one rehearsal.

The video has started to go viral this week and Taiwanese netizens were very touched by the groom's gesture:

The couple now lives in the UK, and the run a Facebook page documenting their adventures.
