Vessel fined NT$1.6 million, held in quarantine for 40 days
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A Chinese fishing vessel was fined NT$1.6 million (USD$51,950) for illegally fishing in Taiwanese waters on Dec. 3, 2018, reported CNA.
The vessel was caught illegally fishing off the coast of Hsinchu, and 4.8 kilograms of contraband pork products was found onboard.
Due to concerns surrounding spread of African swine fever, the vessel was held in quarantine and disinfected while an investigation took place. This process took 40 days, and the vessel left Taiwanese territory on Jan. 10.
Tseng Shu-feng (曾樹風), deputy head of the coast guard’s 12th squadron, said that the fine was issued in accordance with the Act Governing Relations between the People of the Taiwan Area and the Mainland Area (臺灣地區與大陸地區人民關係條例).
