HTC announces new VIVE Pro Eye and VIVE Cosmo
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwanese electronics company HTC (宏達電) unveiled two new virtual reality (VR) headsets at the Consumer Electronics Show 2019 event in Las Vegas on Jan. 7.
HTC showcased the latest iteration of the VIVE Pro headset, the VIVE Pro Eye, which offers the cutting edge of VR technology, as well as the new VIVE Cosmo, which offers greater comfort and ease of use.
The VIVE Eye Pro is HTC’s first VR headset to include built-in eye tracking, giving users the option to use the device without a traditional controller. The product is an upgrade on HTC’s current VIVE Pro model.
The use of eye tracking opens new possibilities for an immersive gaming experience, as well as more information for training simulations during professional applications.
HTC teamed up with Major League baseball to demonstrate the eye tracking software with a home run game, which proved popular on the first days of the event.
HTC said the VIVE Eye Pro is targeted at the enterprise market for training purposes, and will be available in the second quarter of 2019.
HTC also unveiled its newest VR headset, the VIVE Cosmo, which is expected to compete with the Oculus Quest. The headset does not require external sensors to track motion, allowing for it to be used in a wide variety of contexts.
The VIVE Cosmos is used with two hand-held controllers, and the headset includes four external cameras.
The VIVE Cosmo is designed to be comfortable and easy to use, as HTC’s analysis showed this was a key concern of consumers.
Price, launch date, and more information will be announced later this year.
