National Highway No. 5 from Taipei to Yilan expected to have major congestion, significant delays


TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The Freeway Bureau under the Ministry of Transportation is cautioning drivers in northern Taiwan against possible delays and traffic jams as people head out of the city to visit families for on New Year’s Eve.

As of 9:00 a.m. traffic on highways around Taipei was running smoothly, but the flow is expected to increase heavily beginning in the early afternoon, reports CNA.

The Freeway Bureau warns that travelers taking National Highway No. 5 (國道5號) from Taipei to Yilan through New Taipei’s Pinglin County could see delays of up to 10 hours with the highest volume of traffic expected between 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

The bureau will be implementing control measures on national highways to assist with the high flow of traffic out of the city.

The Freeway Bureau cautions travelers traveling on the following national highways during the periods listed below.

National Highway No.1 – Travelers driving south or east out of Taipei between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m., should expect their travel time to be about four times the average weekday trip.

National Highway No.3 – Travelers taking the No. 3 highway headed south between 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. should expect moderate delays and a travel time about four times the average weekday trip.

National Highway No.5 – Travelers headed out of Taipei to Yilan, be careful taking the No. 5 highway between 12:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Traffic jams and delays may contribute to a travel time of up to seven times the average drive.

National Highway No. 6 – A warning for the No. 6 Highway in central Taiwan for travelers heading towards Nantou from Taichung between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. has also been issued. Drive time may be up to three times the average.

For alternate transportation routes, the Ministry of Transportation suggests using Taiwan Rd. 61 (台61) for travelers heading south on the west coast, and Taiwan Rd. 9 (台9) for travelers heading south on the east coast, reports CNA.
