Disillusioned US academics call for government action to counteract China
幻想破滅的美國學者呼籲政府採取行動抵制中國的滲透

China is reportedly mounting an unprecedented campaign to penetrate the U.S. in every aspect
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – As global attention is drawn to the talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping at the G20 meeting in Argentina, a media report revealed that American academia has raised the alarm about China’s infiltration across the U.S.
A total of 32 American academics, including heavyweights, such as Bonnie Glaser and Andrew J. Nathan, who used to advocate stronger ties between the world’s two largest economies, have jointly presented a report to the U.S. government indicating the unprecedented scale of infiltration activity that China has been engaging in universities, the media, think tanks, and corporations within the U.S., Liberty Times said, citing a report carried by Wall Street Journal.
The scholars warned that Washington has not been fully prepared for the consequences of the campaign waged by China, which could undermine democratic institutions of the U.S. They called for stricter scrutiny of Chinese activity in a wide range of areas, as China is keen on meddling with American affairs, and using an investment of resources unparalleled by Russia.
The report, authored by Larry Diamond, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, and Orville Schell, the Arthur Ross Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society in New York, reflected the “disillusionment” of a host of China experts, Wall Street Journal wrote.
The report suggested that a federal institution should be established to provide consultation for state governments and NGOs in the U.S. on issues concerning cooperation with Chinese counterparts. Washington is also advised to impose restrictions on visas for Chinese journalists, think tank members, and college scholars.
