N. Taiwan to see low of 17 degrees Celsius by Wednesday as northeasterly winds howl

Temperature to drop down to 17 degrees Celsius in northern, central Taiwan by Wednesday as northeasterly winds strengthen


TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- Northern and central Taiwan will see wetter and cooler weather this week as a southern cloud system arrives and northeasterly winds strengthen, with low temperatures dipping down to 17 degrees Celsius starting Wednesday and continuing onto Dec. 1.

The Central Weather Bureau's (CWB) forecaster, Lee Meng-shuan (李孟軒), said that a southern cloud system began affecting Taiwan last night, and rain started to fall. He predicts that this wave of moist air will continue to affect Taiwan well into Wednesday; after which rainfall in southern and central Taiwan will gradually start to diminish. However northern and eastern Taiwan will continue to see precipitation.

As for temperatures, Lee said that northeasterly winds will intensify today and the low temperatures will drop again. He predicts that the northeasterly winds will continue to affect Taiwan through Saturday (Dec. 1). From today until Wednesday, low temperatures in northern and central Taiwan will range between 19 and 20 degrees.

After Wednesday, Lee said northeasterly winds will intensify and the low temperatures in northern and central Taiwan will dip to about 17 to 18 degrees. As for today's high temperatures, Taiwan will see cooler temperatures than yesterday, with a high of 23 degrees in northern Taiwan, 19 to 25 degrees in central Taiwan, and 20 to 26 degrees in southern Taiwan, according to Lee.

Lee warned of the temperature extremes between day and night in northern and central Taiwan, and has advised people to take a jacket with them when going outdoors.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Man-Yi (萬宜) has been downgraded to a tropical storm and, as of 2 a.m. this morning, it had a radius of 100 kilometers and was located 1,520 kilometers east-southeast of Taiwan's southernmost tip of Eluanbi, according to the CWB. It was moving north-northwest at a speed of 16 kilometers per hour (kph) while packing maximum sustained winds of 82 kilometers per hour, with gusts of 108 kph.

Man-Yi is likely to be downgraded to a tropical depression tomorrow, while Tropical Storm Usagi (天兔), the 29th tropical storm of the year, has already been downgraded into a tropical depression, as its remnants churn over southern Vietnam and into Cambodia tonight.
