Dalai Lama says Chinese government needs to take a more practical approach to Tibet

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The 14th Dalai Lama said the Chinese government is beginning to understand that its policy of suppressing Tibetans is useless, during a speech at Japan’s parliament on Nov. 20, reported CNA.

The Chinese government needs to implement a more practical approach, and the people of China could spiritually benefit through Tibetan Buddhism, said the Dalai Lama.

The bipartisan “Tibetan National Assembly League” invited the Dalai Lama to speak to an audience including lawmakers, media, and civil society groups, reports suggest.

The Dalai Lama said that the Chinese government is trying to repress, brainwash, and kill Tibetans, adding that these efforts have led to a rise in the spirit of Tibet.

A view among some Chinese intellectuals that Tibet should have greater autonomy while staying within China’s national jurisdiction is proliferating through the middle-class, suggested the Dalai Lama, reported Sankei Shimbun of Japan.

He went on to say that Tibet does not want to pursue independence, but rather, greater autonomy, reported CNA.

The Dalai Lama went on to say that ethnically-Han Chinese people are beginning to recognize that their government’s policy is wrong.

Going beyond politics, the Dalai Lama spoke about environmental degradation, mentioning that Tibet is easily affected by climate change due to its high altitude. He called on the world to investigate and take action against climate change.

This was the Dalai Lama’s fourth speech at Japan’s parliament, with the last one taking place in Nov. 2016.
