Taipei metro stampede culprit caught on CCTV:a10 cm long rat

The rat 'hoppedon'the trainat MRT Daan Park Station and disembarked at the next station after causing chaos


TAIPEI (Taiwan News) - The 10 cm longrat that caused a stampede on a Taipei metro train was identifiedwith CCTV footage, saidthetrain operator TaipeiRapid TransitCorporation.

During the morning rush houron Wednesday, a bizarre stampede occurred ona train bound for Xiangshan on theTamsui-Xinyiline and left at least two passengers injured.The culprit was initiallysuspected to be a rogue rodent.

The incident occurred at 9:04 a.m. after the train departedDaanPark Station.Passengersin the crowded train spotted a raton the move, causingsome terrified commuters to scream andscurry the next carriage. Passengers with no knowledge of the rodentinthe next car noticed horrifiedthrongs of people fleeingto other carriages and did the same.

Several passengers posted images of the aftermath onsocial media, and the incident was soonconfirmed by the company.

The company issued a press release later that day, sayingCCTV footageshowed a 10 cm long rat "hopping on"the trainat MRT Daan Park Station when the gates opened. The unwelcomeguest then moved betweendifferent carriages andfreaked out train riders.

The DaanPark Station is adjacent to the city's largest park - DaanForest Park.

The company added that its control center informed the 700 passengers on the trainimmediately to disembark at the next station,Daan,and wait for the next train.

As the train approached DaanStation, passengers on the train scrambled to get off,knockingover somepeople queuing for the trainin the process. The culprit slipped fromthe train among the chaos and is believed to have entered train tracks.

The company said it has yet to catch the rat, but has cleanedand sterilizedthe train.
