We are getting gay marriage for Christmas, promises Australian PM
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The head of the Australian Board of Statistics, David Kalisch, announced on Wednesday the results of a national poll which showed that the majority of Australians are in favor of same-sex marriage.??
Precisely 79.5% of the population participated, with 61% voting in favor of the new law. That's 7,817,247 people voting yes to same-sex marriage and 4,873,987 voting no, reported The Guardian.
Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull expressed at a press conference that:
[Australians have] spoken in their millions and they have voted overwhelmingly yes for marriage equality ... they voted yes for love.
A same-sex marriage bill will soon be considered in Parliament, with this most recent poll serving as additional momentum for its passing. Turnbull has promised to pass the bill and make gay marriage the law by Christmas. In 2015 Ireland first legalized gay-marriage with a referendum and Australia hopes to follow suit.
A large amount of generally conservative voters even said yes, causing some uneasiness across the party.
The poll was administered by choice, not out of obligation, by PM Turnbull and cost $97 million to do so.
