TAIPEI (Taiwan News)--Taiwanese tennis star Chan Yung-jen (詹詠然) took to Facebook on Sunday night to express her feeling about her partner Martina Hingis’ retirement, saying it’s hard to say goodbye to this perfect partner and thanking Hingis for giving her the opportunity to play with her idol.

Chan and Hingis lifted a tour-leading nine trophies in 2017, including their maiden Grand Slam title as a team at the US Open.

Tributes have been pouring in for Hingis from her WTA peers, after the Swiss legend announced her retirement during the WTA Finals in Singapore last week.

Hingis was honored in a retirement ceremony at the end of the WTA Finals on Sunday. Current and former WTA players wished Hingis well on social media. As Hingis’ last partner, Chan also took to Facebook to express her feeling about her partnership with the legend.

In the post, Chan hinted that she knew when her partnership with Hingis would end.

“Since the beginning of pairing up with Martina, we both know with every match we play, every title we win will only get us to this day closer and closer, so we both worked hard to make sure we finish the season as high as we can,” Chan wrote in the post.

Chan expressed her gratitude for the inspiration from Hingis. “She was my idol when I started to play tennis. She inspires me even till today. She is the reason why I'm standing here with the doubles world No.1 ranking, but other than that, she's such a nice person, a great friend to have for life. She brings so much joy, and she made me realize I can be a better player and dare to be that player,” Chan wrote.

“During her official retirement ceremony today, it was very emotional for us. It's hard to say goodbye to this perfect partner.”

In the end, Chan thanked Hingis for giving her the opportunity to play with her idol. "Thanks to the rainy day in Melbourne so we get to practice together, and thank you for throwing that question to ask me about playing together. It's been such an incredible and unforgettable journey, I wouldn't thought I could have a chance to play with my idol when I was 8 years old, to be aside of you and to accomplish what we have achieved has been such an honor for me. I wish you nothing but all the best to your next chapter....you will always be the legendary and my best friend forever.”
