Taipei to officially open interim Dongmen Market

台北市東門市場臨時場地將正式啟用

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei’s interim Dongmen Market began a trial run on Wednesday and will officially open on Oct. 9, allowing vendors to continue operating while the century-old original market is redeveloped.

CNA reported that all 45 vendors from the original Dongmen Market have moved to the temporary site. Taipei’s Market Administration Office said the facility has air conditioning, improved lighting and ventilation, and wider walkways for shoppers.

Dongmen Market was established in 1928 during the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945) and later became known for its high-quality fresh food. Older generations of Taipei residents called it the “aristocratic market” because it was near government offices and official residences.

The city built the interim market to keep vendors in business during redevelopment. The temporary site also provides cleaner and more spacious shopping areas than the original market, per Liberty Times.

Some vendors said they are still adjusting to the new equipment and layout. They said longtime customers returned on the first day of the trial run, while residents welcomed the cooler and less humid environment.

The market is divided into three sections for prepared food, fresh produce and meat, and general merchandise. Vendors sell items including rice noodle soup, vegetables, meat, seafood, imported goods, religious supplies, hardware, and clothing, per FTV News.

The market office said the city plans to begin demolishing the original Dongmen Market on Feb. 1, 2027. It said that the interim market’s official opening on Oct. 9 will include promotional offers and other activities.
