Taiwan and Lithuania sign agreement on advanced semiconductor packaging
台灣與立陶宛簽署先進半導體封裝合作協議
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan and Lithuania signed a memorandum of understanding Friday to deepen cooperation on laser technology for advanced semiconductor packaging.
The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) signed the deal with the Lithuanian Laser Association and the Center for Physical Sciences and Technology during Semicon Taiwan, per Rti. The two-year project will receive about NT$205 million (5.6 million euros) in government funding and promote cooperation between companies in the two countries.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) said the agreement is being jointly promoted by the countries’ foreign and economic ministries and research institutions, according to Rti.
Lin said combining the two sides’ complementary strengths could advance cutting-edge technology and strengthen democratic and economic resilience. He said the partnership reflects Taiwan’s efforts to pursue “diplomacy of prosperity” based on shared democratic values.
Lithuanian representative to Taiwan Karolis Pilipauskas said the two sides have continued to deepen cooperation in lasers and semiconductors since the establishment of the Ultrafast Laser Technology Research and Innovation Center in 2023, Rti reported. Pilipauskas said the latest agreement will introduce next-generation lasers for advanced chip manufacturing applications.
ITRI President Chang Pei-zen (張培仁) said the cooperation will focus on two main areas, beginning with the introduction of Lithuania’s high-power, energy-efficient laser sources for integration with Taiwan’s digital laser imaging, AI control, and high-precision scanning modules, per CNA. The second will target advanced manufacturing processes through joint equipment integration.
The joint venture will also accelerate validation of new materials and help Taiwanese equipment manufacturers expand into advanced packaging applications, Chang said. He said it is expected to generate more than NT$300 million in industrial benefits for Taiwanese companies, CNA reported.
