Taiwan raises benefits for conscripts injured in line of duty

台灣提高義務役軍人因公受傷之給付

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of the Interior said Saturday it will raise condolence payments and care allowances for conscripts injured in the line of duty by up to 30% starting Tuesday.

Interior Minister Liu Shih-fang (劉世芳) announced the increases after the ministry amended regulations governing benefits for military conscripts and alternative service draftees who are injured or killed in the line of duty, per CNA.

Under the revised standards, holiday condolence payments will range from NT$16,000 (US$500) to NT$66,000 depending on the degree of disability, per UDN. Payments will increase by NT$6,000 for people with complete paralysis, NT$4,500 for those with lower-body paralysis, and NT$3,000 for other disability levels.

Monthly care allowances will also rise, from NT$3,200 to NT$3,900 for people with lower-body paralysis and from NT$7,463 to NT$9,100 for those with complete paralysis. The ministry said the adjustments take into account long-term care needs, changes in the consumer price index, and higher living costs in recent years.

Liu said the increases are intended to ease the financial burden on injured personnel and their families. The ministry said it will continue improving assistance for conscripts and alternative service draftees who become disabled after line-of-duty injuries, including those who have already completed their service.
