Taiwan extends classes for DUI repeat offenders
台灣延長酒駕累犯講習課程時數
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Repeat offenders for individuals suspected of driving under the influence and for driving without a license under the legal age will face longer traffic safety courses from next month, reports said Saturday.
The Ministry of Transportation Highway Bureau said it had proposed the programs to correct illegal behavior, per Liberty Times. Repeat offenses showed that courses had failed to reach the desired effect the first time round, the bureau said.
From late September, classes for driving under the influence (DUI) repeat offenders will be extended to 15 hours from 12 hours. The road safety courses for drivers under 18 who are caught twice will take six hours.
The overall trend for underage drivers without a license is declining, the bureau said. In 2021, police recorded 38,421 cases, but the number declined by half to 19,064 in 2025. The latter number included 3,790 repeat offenders, Liberty Times reported.
Another new program awaiting introduction in late September is road training for scooterists. The Highway Bureau said it was still working out the details about whether the course should be compulsory and about the availability of subsidies.
