Taiwan Rail implements new color system to indicate direction of trains
台鐵導入新色彩系統標示列車行駛方向
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan Railway Corporation has started implementing a new color-coding system to help travelers find their train, with blue designating northbound and green southbound trains.
The new system will appear first at Tainan’s new underground station in October, per UDN. The change will allow travelers to find the right platform and train more quickly, the Ministry of Transportation said.
The colors are part of a general effort at standardization of the rail system for passengers. Not only the colors, but also the font of signs and the design of information panels will become more uniform and give a less chaotic impression, according to Taiwan Rail.
The general layout and signalization at the new station in Tainan will also take the needs of seniors, the impaired, and foreign travelers into account. The changes will be gradually expanded to 220 stations depending on the availability of funding, UDN reported.
Tainan counts 50,000 train passengers per day, making it the fifth busiest railway station in the country. The new station will also feature a different type of gate, allowing for varied payment methods.
The NT$1 billion (US$31.6 million) budget will allow for similar gates to be installed at Nangang and Banqiao stations in the near future, and at all stations north of Hsinchu during 2027.
