Metro Taipei improves carriage safety

台北捷運提升車廂安全性

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Metro Taipei said Tuesday that the ongoing carriage redesign will include more safety initiatives, according to a company press release.

The metro said the improvements center around passenger well-being. It noted the upgrades will extend from the entire Blue Line to include select trains from the Red (4), Orange (6), and Green Line (2), totaling 54 trains, per the Liberty Times.

The metro said it will continue to add support poles in front of single-row seats. It added that open spaces will receive bright yellow grab handles, a horizontal handrail, and visual indicators.

The metro said that there are now 144 sets of door-side grab handles per train, with the height lowered from 161 centimeters to 155 centimeters to accommodate passengers in need. It added that the Blue Line will increase installations per train from 846 to 876.

Metro Taipei said that removing the center pole has made it easier for wheelchairs, baby carriages, and passengers with larger luggage to maneuver. It noted that the easing of congestion has improved operational efficiency.

Metro Taipei said the redesign is influenced by global cities such as New York, Tokyo, and Singapore. It explained that these cities have adopted open spaces to handle busy crowds with improved accessibility.
