Taipei details progress on esports arena

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) announced Saturday during his address at the 2026 Major Six League of Legends Taipei finals that Taiwan’s first esports-focused sports center will open later this year, according to a city press release.

Chiang said the tournament has become a major event as it entered its 10th year, citing last year’s finals, which drew 27,000 attendees and 3 million livestream viewers. He pledged continued support for the Taipei City Cup Esports Invitational, which is designed to let domestic players learn from and compete with top international players to improve overall standards.

League of Legends is a session-based multiplayer online battle arena game developed by Riot Games featuring five-player teams controlling champions to defeat one another. It is the world's largest esports title, being played 100 million times per month, and multiple regional leagues compete in an annual world championship.

The annual Major Six tournament is jointly held and sponsored by Taiwan's six special municipalities to promote regional esports culture. It serves as a platform for potential players to demonstrate their abilities in a team-based environment.

Chiang also mentioned that esports is now a competitive category in the Asian Games. He noted that League of Legends will be held at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya and urged competitors to perform at their best.

Separately, Chiang detailed progress on the Taipei Sports Centers 2.0 initiative to build eight themed venues, following the July opening of the Taipei Xinsheng Sports Center, which features extreme sports.

The upcoming Gongguan Sports Center will include badminton, pickleball, a swimming pool, and fitness zones alongside a professional esports arena for training and tournaments, providing a new venue for the local esports scene.
