TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — A revived expansion of Longtan Science Park in Taoyuan has moved to Cabinet review, with TSMC signaling interest in returning to the site.

The project cleared the Science Park Council in May and was submitted to the Cabinet in June, which has asked the National Development Council to review it, per CNA. Authorities aim to finish land acquisition by the end of 2029 and begin public construction in 2030.

Officials estimate the expansion could produce NT$310 billion (US$9.63 billion) in annual economic output and create about 6,200 jobs.

TSMC has said it would be interested in entering the park if the required procedures are approved. Supply-chain sources said the company is considering two to three 1.4 nanometer fabs and two advanced packaging plants, though the final configuration remains pending, per Liberty Times.

The original expansion proposal covered 158.59 hectares, but opposition grew because about 88% of the land targeted for acquisition was in private hands. TSMC dropped its Longtan plan in October 2023, and the project was later reduced before some residents and landowners petitioned for a larger development area.

The current proposal covers 104.19 hectares, with roughly 46 hectares designated for science park companies.

CNA reported that several regulatory and land procedures remain before construction can start, including environmental review and land-use changes. Officials are separately assessing the project’s future water and electricity needs.
