Costco planning second location in Tainan

好市多(Costco)計劃在台南開設第二家分店

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan City Government said Monday it signed a contract with Costco for a new store in East District that will bring more than NT$4.5 billion (US$138 million) in private investment.

The project is planned for two commercial land parcels in the South Tainan Station redevelopment area. City officials said the area is expected to see population growth and stronger demand for shopping and daily services.

Liberty Times reported that Costco was selected as the top bidder in August 2025, and the contract was signed at the end of March. The city government said construction is expected to begin between late 2026 and early 2027, with completion and opening planned for 2028.

Costco plans to build about 12,230 square meters of shopping space and more than 1,000 parking spaces. The new store is expected to be larger than Tainan’s current Costco branch.

The city government said the project will include more than 1,650 square meters of open space and about 560 square meters of space for public use. These areas could be used for parent-child activities, local events, youth business displays, and small farmer showcases.

Costco also plans to build its first gas station in southern Taiwan at the location. A pedestrian walkway with public art is planned along Shengchan Road to give residents more space for walking and exercise, per Yahoo News.

Traffic has been a major concern for nearby residents and the city government. Costco plans to put the entrance and exit on the north side of the site and set back the building area to create a 70-meter vehicle queuing lane.

The city government said Costco must submit a traffic management plan and traffic impact review for approval. Officials said they will continue to review the project’s design and communicate with local residents, per EBC.
