TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taoyuan International Airport has teamed up with CPC Corp. to promote land and marine ecological conservation initiatives at selected sites in Taoyuan, Keelung, and New Taipei.

Earlier this month, the two agencies sent personnel to inspect the habitat of little terns at a fishing port in Taoyuan’s Dayuan District, per CNA. The protected species migrates from Australia to the northern and northeastern coasts of Taiwan each summer to breed.

The airport said it will establish a sheltered area for the birds. Some local governments have also set up restricted zones during the breeding season between April and August to prevent disturbances.

The airport added that it will also cooperate with CPC on a butterfly habitat restoration project near its Taoyuan refinery. The program involves extensive planting of nectar plants to provide a suitable environment for butterflies to survive.

Additionally, the two agencies will install facilities along the Keelung River to help wild animals that accidentally enter the waterway escape safely.

Last year, the airport received certification from Airports Council International for its carbon reduction efforts. Over the past five years, it has achieved a cumulative reduction of 8,877 tonnes of carbon emissions.

The airport is continuing to upgrade facilities for sustainable aviation fuel. It has also partnered with CPC and Formosa Petrochemical to promote greater use of the fuel by domestic airlines.

To protect offshore algal reef ecosystems, CPC has stepped up conservation efforts at its LNG terminal in Taoyuan’s Guanyin District. It has also carried out coral preservation and restoration projects near its natural gas storage facility in Kaohsiung’s Yongan District.
