Taiwan’s TCC Group eyes expansion in European markets

台灣台泥國際集團有限公司(TCC)著眼於拓展歐洲市場

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — TCC Group Holdings is eyeing European expansion and sees strong demand in the region for infrastructure, low-carbon cement, and energy storage, Economic Daily News reported.

The company said it has shifted from a cement manufacturer to a supplier of low-carbon building materials and green energy equipment. It hopes to rebound from last year’s NT$11.6 billion (US$350 million) loss, which included extensive damage from a fire at its subsidiary Molicel’s lithium battery plant in Kaohsiung in July.

To recover from losses at Molicel’s battery plant, the company has opened a new pilot line for advanced batteries at its Tainan facility, targeting high-end clients such as US electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft manufacturers.

The company said Europe accounts for 32.5% of its cement business, followed by China at 24% and Taiwan at 18.5%. Its European energy storage business makes up 12% of the total, making the region a key market.

TCC said demand for cement in Europe is expected to keep growing due to urban renewal projects. The company holds a 53% market share in Portugal and strengthened its position in Europe’s low-carbon cement market in 2024 by acquiring Portuguese cement maker Cimpor.

TCC added that Cimpor will continue producing cement using biomass fuel in Africa, which cuts carbon emissions by about 40% compared with traditional cement. The company also plans to sell its low-carbon cement to the UK in the second half of this year.

In January, another TCC subsidiary, Atlante, won contracts to build EV charging stations at six Italian highway service areas. The contracts will allow TCC to use its EnergyArk energy storage units to store electricity during off-peak hours and release it during peak times to support the high power demand of EV chargers.

TCC Chair Nelson Chang (張安平) said Atlante has installed over 1,000 EV charging stations across four European countries. The company plans to continue expanding its energy storage business in Europe and deploy more EnergyArk units in the region’s transportation infrastructure.
