Ju Percussion Group to run Taipei's Beitou Film Studio
朱宗慶打擊樂團(Ju Percussion Group)將營運台北北投製片廠
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei’s Beitou Film Studio will be revitalized under a new rehabilitate-operate-transfer project awarded to the Ju Percussion Group, city officials announced Monday.
Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) said the studio has played a key role in the development of Taiwan’s film industry and remains part of the collective memory of many residents, per UDN.
Originally operated by the Fuhsingkang Film Production Company, the studio reached its peak in 1965, producing films such as Storm over the Yangtze River (揚子江風雲) and The Story of Tin-Ying (緹縈), as well as the television series Hanliu (寒流). Its final production was completed in 1995.
Chiang said the Taipei City Government later acquired the site. In 2015, it was designated a special zone for film, television, and audiovisual production. In 2017, Studio A and its recording studio were listed as historic buildings to preserve Taiwan’s cinematic heritage.
Taipei Department of Cultural Affairs Commissioner Tsai Shih-ping (蔡詩萍) said the Ju Percussion Education Foundation will invest NT$69 million (US$2.15 million) to renovate Studio A, the recording studio, and adjacent facilities, including the lobby and outdoor spaces.
The new operator plans to transform the site, aiming to make it “visible and integrated into daily life.” The historic buildings will be repurposed into rehearsal rooms, multifunctional spaces, instrument storage areas, and recording studios.
Tsai said parts of the studio complex will serve as rehearsal venues, while the lobby will be used for administrative functions and the recording studio converted into a multifunctional performance space.
The project also aims to create a hub for diverse artistic and cultural performances, showcase local cultural narratives, and promote cultural tourism in Beitou, combining infrastructure upgrades with new creative programming.
Ju Percussion Group Founder Ju Tzong-ching (朱宗慶) said the organization has relocated six times over the past 40 years and has been based in Beitou for more than 25 years. He said the project offers an opportunity to expand activities ranging from rehearsals and creative work to seminars, international exchanges, and community engagement.
