Taipei MRT transitions to QR codes for single-journey tickets
台北捷運單程票啟用「QR碼」
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei MRT has begun replacing single-journey tokens with QR code tickets, introducing the system at 22 stations and planning a full rollout across all ticket machines, excluding the Circular Line, starting Wednesday.
Unlike traditional plastic tokens, QR single-journey tickets do not require collection, cleaning, or disinfection, a change the metro system said would help create a safer riding environment, per a press release.
The new system also supports Taipei Metro’s broader push toward automation and digitalization. Passengers can purchase paperless QR tickets through the Taipei MRT Go app using credit cards or mobile payment services, including LINE Pay, JKO Pay, GAMA Pay, Pi Wallet, EasyWallet, Px Pay Plus, and icash Pay.
To use the service, riders select their origin and destination stations on a network map or in a drop-down menu, complete payment, and then access their QR codes under “My Tickets.” The code can be scanned at fare gates for entry and exit. Passengers buying multiple tickets must use the corresponding QR codes for entry and exit.
For the Circular Line, QR tickets can be used to enter and exit stations, but are not yet available for purchase at ticket vending machines. Taipei MRT said the line’s operator will announce further details.
The metro system reminded passengers that QR single-journey tickets are valid only on the day of purchase. Compared with tokens, QR tickets clearly display fare details, stations, and purchase date, and are labeled as proof of payment, eliminating the need for separate receipts.
Taipei MRT introduced expanded fare payment options on Jan. 3. The addition of QR single-journey tickets via ticket machines and the Taipei Metro Go app is expected to further improve convenience.
