Taiwan allots NT$151 million to 271 high schools in bilingual education push

台灣撥款1.51億新台幣,用於271所高中推廣雙語教育。

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Ministry of Education said it has allocated NT$151 million (US$4.73 million) to support bilingual campus programs at 271 high schools nationwide under Taiwan’s Bilingual 2030 policy.

K-12 Education Administration official Yeh Hsin-tsun (葉信村) said the program promotes full-English instruction, bilingual teaching in select subjects, online international school partnerships, and workplace English skills, per Liberty Times. Schools are also encouraged to plan engaging, practical bilingual activities that meet student needs and foster a campus-wide bilingual environment.

Taichung Municipal Wen-Hua Senior High School organized an English presentation competition based on the Sustainable Development Goals. Students gather information, organize viewpoints, and deliver presentations in English, using the language as a medium for learning rather than merely for practice.

National Hsinchu Commercial Vocational High School offers elective workplace English courses tied to its strengths and the ministry’s workplace English strategy. Through scenario-based activities, students use English in simulated workplace settings to gain practical skills relevant to future careers.

The Affiliated Taoyuan Agricultural and Industrial Senior High School of National Taipei University of Technology incorporates bilingual learning into international exchange and reception activities. Students participate in guided tours and cultural introductions, using English to communicate naturally and experience its real-world role as a cross-cultural tool.

Yeh said the ministry will continue collecting feedback and results from participating schools to refine the program. The goal is to expand bilingual learning and make English a practical tool for students to understand the world and express their ideas.
