Taiwan’s ITRI partners with US Green UAS to boost drone cybersecurity certification

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Industrial Technology Research Institute has joined the US Association for Uncrewed Vehicle Systems International’s (AUVSI) Green UAS program, becoming the first overseas organization recognized for drone cybersecurity testing, CNA reported.

On Tuesday, the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding in Washington. The signing took place ahead of the Economic Prosperity Partnership Dialogue between the US and Taiwan, which underscores closer industry-government collaboration to strengthen supply chains, secure technology development, and expand manufacturing partnerships.

Under the Green UAS program, AUVSI reviews drones and their components to ensure they comply with US supply chain rules under the National Defense Authorization Act. ITRI will handle cybersecurity testing and technical evaluations as part of the agreement.

AUVSI said that it will hold ITRI to the same accreditation, oversight, and quality standards as other organizations approved to test and evaluate drones. As part of the Green UAS program, AUVSI also conducts penetration testing — simulated cyberattacks on computer systems or networks — to identify security vulnerabilities before they can be exploited.

AUVSI President Michael Robbins emphasized the importance of cybersecurity in the drone sector. He said the US government has been working to establish a highly trusted UAV supply chain, noting the partnership with ITRI will help advance drone development worldwide.

ITRI added that drone development has shifted from boosting technology and performance to strengthening system security, supply chain, and integrated functionality. The agency pledged to continue expanding its cybersecurity testing capabilities and to help domestic UAV makers produce models that meet international standards.

Economics Minister Kung Ming-hsin (龔明鑫), Taiwan Representative to the US Alexander Yui (俞大㵢), ITRI President Chang Pei-zen (張培仁), and American Institute in Taiwan Deputy Director Karin Lang attended the signing.

AUVSI is a global organization with members from more than 60 countries, dedicated to advancing uncrewed systems and robotics. The group promotes industry growth, fosters collaboration, provides educational resources, and advocates for policies that promote autonomous technologies.
