Tainan's Chimei Museum opens large Egypt exhibition
台南奇美博物館舉辦大型埃及展覽
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Tainan's Chimei Museum on Wednesday inaugurated Taiwan’s largest-ever ancient Egypt exhibition, featuring hundreds of rare artifacts on loan from the British Museum.
Tainan City Government said the exhibition, titled “Pharaoh: King of Egypt,” brings together 280 artifacts, with about 99% shown in Taiwan for the first time. The items span 3,000 years of ancient Egyptian history and use immersive lighting and sound to draw visitors in.
“The exhibition lets people experience major world civilizations without leaving Taiwan,” Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che (黃偉哲) said. He added that the show also proves Tainan can host large-scale international cultural events, Yahoo News reported.
Daniel Antoine, head of the British Museum’s Egypt and Sudan Department, said the museum has worked to share human civilization with the public since it was founded in 1753, according to UDN. He said the partnership aims to help people in Taiwan see ancient Egyptian culture up close.
“The exhibition shows how pharaohs used religion and power to rule and how those ideas still connect to society today,” Chimei Museum Director Hsu Chia-chang (許家彰) said, per the Liberty Times. He added that the museum focuses on bringing world-class cultural content to the public.
“Pharaoh: King of Egypt” runs from Thursday through Jan. 10, 2027, and tickets are available online and at the venue. Organizers said guided tours, interactive areas, and family programs were added to help visitors better understand the artifacts.
