Taipei Metro to launch QR code payments in January

台北捷運將於1月推出QR乘車碼支付

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei Metro will introduce QR code ticketing in January and fully activate credit card payments by July.

Taipei Metro said Sunday its QR code system will debut next year in tandem with Taipei’s bus network. The new QR option will mark the system’s largest ticketing upgrade in years, per CNA.

QR code payments will support major digital wallets, including Easy Wallet, iPass Money, and Line Pay, per UDN. Providers will be added in phases as the system verifies transaction capabilities and data transfer regulations with the bus network.

For credit cards, riders will be able to tap physical cards or use cards bound to Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. Apple Pay’s Express Mode is still under development and awaiting verification with partner banks.

Taipei Metro said hardware installation for its gate-module replacement project was completed in October. They announced that the upgrade includes 1,396 new electronic QR-reading units and 2,361 multi-payment external modules and that testing is underway.
