New public housing in Taipei’s Nangang set for 2029 completion

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taipei City Government said that construction has started on a new public housing project in Nangang District, which will provide 88 units and is expected to be completed in 2029.
The building, being constructed by Kindom Development Co. for NT$690 million (US$23 million), will have three underground floors and 12 above-ground floors, per CNA.
Taipei’s Urban Development Department said the project will include spacious leisure areas and be set back more than 4 meters from the road for safety. The building will also feature energy-saving equipment, earthquake-resistant structures, and accessible facilities.
At the groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday, Taipei Deputy Mayor Lee Shu-chuan (李四川) said the city government has built public housing to help young people reduce rental and home-buying burdens, providing more than 12,950 units, with around 4,000 units under construction.
In November, an additional public housing project in Taipei’s Beitou District broke ground, marking the Cabinet’s sixth such development in the city — scheduled for completion in 2029. The 14-story building will have 468 housing units and eight retail spaces. Located near MRT Fuxinggang Station, it is close to a film and television industry park set to break ground next year.
Xining Public Housing in Wanhua District, which has faced issues with poor management, weak earthquake resistance, and falling incidents, will be demolished next year. The city government plans to replace it with two new public housing buildings, offering about 1,000 units.
The new development, near Ximen and Taipei Main Station, is expected to include a new market with cold-chain facilities to help vendors upgrade their operations. However, some market operators have raised concerns that the new market will reduce stall space and provide insufficient unloading areas.
