TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Attendees at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference, or COP30, were served canned beverages from Heineken and Singapore's Brewerkz brewery as part of an initiative promoting sustainable packaging and a circular economy, per Business Today.
The event, held in Brazil’s Belem, from Nov. 10–21, brought together world leaders, scientists, and civil society to accelerate climate action and limit global warming to 1.5 C. The conference focused on developing new national climate plans and advancing climate finance. Key outcomes included agreements on fostering a green economy and providing long-term funding for forest conservation.
In partnership with the Federal Government of Brazil, Heineken donated 1.5 million cans of Mamba Water for participants in the Blue Zone at COP30, the area where climate negotiations and decision-making take place. This is the first time a COP Blue Zone has offered water in aluminum cans to delegates, with plans to recycle the cans into new ones after use.
At COP30’s Singapore Pavilion, attendees were served Brewerkz’s canned beer NewBrew. The beer, made using cold maturation techniques, has a golden color and a mildly bitter hop aroma. Its can design showcases solar panels and Singapore’s cityscape, highlighting the country’s efforts in sustainable development.
The beer is made using recycled water from Singapore, developed by Brewerkz in partnership with the nation’s National Water Agency. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on water imports from Malaysia by treating and purifying reclaimed wastewater into water suitable for daily use and safe drinking.
Singapore’s wastewater treatment technology meets about 40% of the country’s water demand. The government plans to use it to supply 55% of the nation’s water by 2060.
