Taipei breaks ground on new Beitou public housing project

台北市北投新社會住宅工程破土動工

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The new public housing project in Taipei’s Beitou District broke ground Monday, marking the Cabinet’s sixth such development in the city and scheduled for completion in 2029, CNA reported.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, the National Housing and Urban Regeneration Center said the 14-story project will feature 468 housing units and eight retail spaces. Located near the MRT Fuxinggang Station, the building will sit close to a film and television industry park scheduled to break ground next year, while the surrounding area includes schools and a library.

The center noted the project will feature energy-saving equipment and be built as a green building. It is also set to include a daycare center and provide elder-friendly community services.

The center said the district has become one of the city’s major population-growth hotspots, driven by Nvidia’s upcoming overseas headquarters at the Beitou–Shilin Technology Park and the presence of tech firms such as Asus and Pegatron. It added that the project will cost NT$3.1 billion (US$99 million) to build, fully funded by the government.

Deputy Interior Minister Dong Jian-hong (董建宏) thanked the Armaments Bureau for providing the land for the project, saying the move supports the government’s efforts to assist young people and newly married couples. He said the ministry has supplied 1,022 public housing units for these groups this year and plans to expand the number to 10,000 over the next three years.

DPP Legislator Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) said the project’s proximity to Taipei National University of the Arts and the upcoming film and television industry park is expected to draw more artistic talent to live and work in the district.

The district has one completed social housing project with 288 units near the MRT Qiyan and Qilian stations, featuring a community activity center and a daycare facility. Another project under construction will provide 363 units and include facilities for people with disabilities, elder day care, and a childcare center.
