Fans flood Kaohsiung for K-Pop group Twice

粉絲湧入高雄觀賞韓國女子團體TWICE的演出

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — South Korean girl group Twice performed on Saturday and Sunday at Kaohsiung Stadium, drawing huge crowds, with many fans spending the day buying merchandise and listening to the group’s rehearsal from outside, cheering loudly, per CNA.

The concerts were the group’s first in Taiwan since their debut 10 years ago and attracted many fans from around Asia, as Japanese, English, and other foreign languages could be heard across the stadium grounds. One Japanese fan said she traveled to Taiwan specifically for the concert to see her idols, noting that Taiwanese member Chou Tzu-yu (周子瑜) is her favorite.

The massive influx of fans caused congestion at the MRT station, and streets were filled with elaborately dressed fans wearing the group’s signature blue. Police increased enforcement against illegal vendors and assisted with crowd control.

Regarding illegal street vending, police issued five citations and gave warnings to 20 vendors. Officers said enforcement will continue.

The Kaohsiung Rapid Transit system reported that MRT ridership on Saturday hit 350,000, marking the highest single-day figure of the year and the ninth-highest on record. Previous records were all set during New Year’s Eve and Lunar New Year holiday periods, per CNA.

In addition to Twice’s concerts at Kaohsiung Stadium, Wu Bai (伍佰) performed at Kaohsiung Arena, and May Sun (孫淑媚) performed at the Kaohsiung Music Center, drawing crowds across the city.

KRTC said that following the success of the city’s previous BLACKPINK-themed events, the new TWICE blue-themed campaign attracted even greater public participation, drawing not only concertgoers but also local residents and travelers to visit blue-themed spots across Kaohsiung.
