Tainan's Chimei Museum to host 'Egypt Year' with VR show
台南奇美博物館將舉辦「消失的法老」VR展覽
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Chimei Museum said Tuesday it has introduced a virtual reality program called “Horizon of Khufu” that lets visitors step inside ancient Egypt and embark on a mysterious adventure.
CNA reported Tuesday that the museum has designated next year as the “Egypt Year.” The museum said it will bring a “one-stop ancient Egypt experience” to Taiwan through ancient and authentic artifacts and advanced virtual technology, allowing people to feel the awe of ancient civilization.
The museum pointed out that “Horizon of Khufu” uses the Great Pyramid of Giza, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, as its setting. Through VR devices, visitors are led into this magnificent building to explore mysterious areas that are not open to the public.
Visitors can walk into the depths of the Great Pyramid and reach the Queen’s Chamber, which remains off-limits in real life, the museum added. They can also stand on the 146-meter-high summit and look out over Cairo’s full skyline.
Chimei Museum said the VR program was first introduced in Paris in 2022 and has drawn more than 2 million visitors since then. It noted the Taiwan version will follow the same storyline but will be rebuilt to match the museum’s new VR hall.
The museum said the 45-minute VR experience will run from Jan. 29, 2026, to Jan. 10, 2027, for visitors aged eight and above. It said that online pre-order sales opened today.
In addition to the VR program, Chimei Museum will collaborate with the British Museum to present “Pharaoh: King of Egypt” on Jan. 29, 2026. The exhibition will feature 280 items, including gold jewelry, burial artifacts, temple architecture, and monumental stone sculptures weighing a total of 28 tonnes.
