Taiwan backs Malaysia’s push for media literacy education
臺灣攜手馬來西亞推動媒體素養教育
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia (Dong Zong, 董總) has invited National Taiwan Normal University to help launch a media literacy seed-teacher training program.
NTNU’s Media Literacy Education Center helped set up the three-year program to recruit 22 Malaysian seed teachers from 14 schools, according to the university. The curriculum covers online bullying, privacy, addiction, digital sexual violence, and topics such as pop culture, influencer culture, AI, and misinformation detection. Participating teachers will receive joint certification after completing training and submitting reports.
The program aims to cultivate professional knowledge, teaching ability, and curriculum design skills to develop localized educational resources.
Yan Wen-hao, director of student affairs at Dong Zong, said the association has promoted media literacy for years, primarily through extracurricular activities. With campus bullying in Malaysia on the rise, many schools see media literacy as important but lack guidance on implementation or curriculum design. Partnering with NTNU is intended to introduce a systematic teaching approach, he said.
