Taipei launches animal protection campaign

臺北啟動保護動物運動

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei City Government is holding a series of activities through September, aiming to raise animal welfare awareness and promote responsible pet care among owners.

Taipei Economic Development Department Director Chen Jun-an (陳俊安) said the city government has promoted animal-friendly initiatives, including education programs, policy development, and pet-friendly facilities. The activities also align with key animal awareness dates, such as Taiwan Dog Day on Sept. 9, World Rabies Day on Sept. 28, and World Animal Day on Oct. 4, per CNA.

Taipei will host several activities, including pet-and-owner yoga sessions and an animal-themed Monopoly game. It also plans to offer free in-person classes for pet owners in September, along with 40 free online courses to teach them about proper pet care.

There will also be two hands-on workshops where participants can create animal-themed fabric bags and paint animal figures. Anyone who attends the activities will have a chance to receive pet treats or other souvenirs.

Taipei has 19 parks equipped with dog-friendly facilities, including large grassy areas, climbing ramps, wooden platforms, agility hoops, dog waste bag stations, and hand-washing sinks. Two more dog activity areas will be added this year in parks located in Songshan and Neihu Districts.

The city government added that it will hold a stray dog and cat adoption event at Dahu Park on Sept. 20. A separate pet play event will be held at a park in Songshan District on Sept. 27.

Taipei has 20 bus routes that allow pet dogs on board. When boarding, owners must keep their dogs leashed, held, or seated under their seats.
