Nearly 70% of Taiwan ninth graders use AI

台灣九年級學生近七成使用人工智慧(AI)

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Nearly 70% of Taiwan’s ninth graders have used AI, with homework one of the main applications, according to a survey by the National Academy of Educational Research and Academia Sinica.

The poll drew on data from NAER’s Taiwan Assessment of Student Achievement: Longitudinal Study and Academia Sinica’s Taiwan i-Generation Panel Study, per CNA. It found that 94.2% of ninth graders are aware of generative AI, showing extremely high recognition of these tools among junior high students.

About 69% of students reported having used generative AI, with the largest group using it one to two times per week (46%). Regarding classroom exposure, 53.2% said their teachers had taught them how to use generative AI, indicating that roughly half of schools have begun related instruction.

Students said they use AI for writing homework, translating, searching for information, creating images or videos, learning languages, and chatting. NAER said this shows ninth graders have already integrated AI into multiple aspects of their studies and daily life.

The survey also highlighted a gap between awareness and heavy use. While most students are aware of AI, only 6.8% reported daily use.

NAER said that with half of schools already implementing AI instruction, the education system is placing greater emphasis on the technology. Students are showing the ability to apply AI tools in multiple ways, from academic support to creative expression.
