Taipei launches Tamsui River waterfront redevelopment project
台北啟動淡水河濱水岸環境重建項目
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Taipei City Government announced the Tamsui River waterfront redevelopment project, aiming to improve the environment near the river in the city’s Datong District.
Mayor Chiang Wan-an (蔣萬安) attended a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday at Dadaocheng Wharf Plaza. He said the project, with a budget of NT$1.8 billion (US$56.52 million), will begin with the demolition of existing facilities and is expected to be completed by 2028, per CNA.
Taipei's Hydraulic Engineering Office said the area around the wharf has flower fields, bike paths, a market, and sports facilities, creating a recreational space. The office added that an annual summer fireworks festival held at the wharf attracts approximately 50,000 visitors.
The city government plans to optimize the wharf area to increase visitor capacity for the fireworks festival. It will also widen the riverside walkways to let more visitors enjoy the waterfront scenery.
The city government also aims to create a corridor that will make it easier for individuals to access the riverfront from urban areas, the office said. A pedestrian bridge will be built to connect a park in the district to the waterfront.
The office noted that Dunhuang Wharf, located near Dadaocheng Wharf, is one of the best spots in Taipei to watch planes approaching Taipei Songshan Airport. A new viewing staircase and boating facilities are planned for the site. The project will also preserve nearby historic sites and temples.
The office added that it had conducted seven briefing sessions and environmental assessments before the launch of the project. The city government hopes the initiative will create a more livable environment and generate greater business opportunities for the district.
