TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The National Development Council on Thursday approved the Tourism 2030 plan submitted by the Ministry of Transportation to boost visitor numbers.
The plan sets out to attract more overseas visitors, to boost daily spending by travelers, and to turn tourism into a NT$1 trillion (US$32.77 billion) industry by 2030, per CNA. The Tourism 2030 plan still requires approval from the full Cabinet.
The government intends to upgrade the quality of the hospitality sector for domestic travelers too and diversify tourism by emphasizing different attractions per season and per region. Average daily spending by travelers should increase 2% to 4% by attracting diverse groups, from digital nomads and sports fans to cruise passengers and exhibitors at business fairs, the council said.
Traditional events including the Lantern Festival and food happenings will be promoted to attract domestic travelers. They will be encouraged to travel to less obvious destinations, travel more frequently, and spend more on lodging.
“Balanced Taiwan” is a key feature of the Taiwan 2030 program, with sustainable travel focusing on nature, culture, villages, Indigenous settlements, and farms. In addition, a digital upgrade is expected to affect the quality of management, marketing, and services to result in more sustainable tourism.
