Taiwan High Speed Rail sets out quiet rules for carriages

台灣高鐵制定寧靜車廂規則

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan High Speed Rail will make it easier for passengers to take a nap or read a book thanks to the rollout of quiet rules for all carriages.

Under the new regulations, riders who want to talk on the phone must walk over to the vestibule, the enclosed area at the edge of the train, per CNA. People who want to play media on their devices will also have to reckon with a new earphones requirement.

After a warning, anyone refusing to quiet down may be asked to disembark. The rules come in addition to those already existing around quiet carriages.

The new quiet regime is set to take effect at the end of September, with a three-month promotion period to follow. Updates to the transport contract will be announced tomorrow.

THSR Chair Shih Che (史哲) said he hopes people will be able to rest or read more during their rides. He added that under the current system, many people ignore requests to pipe down, and blaring loudspeaker announcements to the same effect can be counterproductive.
