Two more recall campaigns targeting DPP legislators fail

二階段罷免民進黨「立委」運動失敗

Eight KMT-backed recall efforts against DPP lawmakers have now fallen short

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Two second-stage recall efforts targeting Democratic Progressive Party legislators Wu Szu-yao (吳思瑤) and Wu Pei-yi (吳沛憶) failed on Sunday as the deadline to submit signatures to the Central Election Commission (CEC) expired.

In Wu’s case, the CEC rejected the recall petition because its original initiator, Chang Ke-chin (張克晉), did not appear to formally submit the documents. The campaign had collected 27,920 signatures — more than the required threshold — but could not proceed without Chang’s participation, per Liberty Times.

Meanwhile, the recall campaign against Wu Pei-yi fell short by about 3,000 signatures, and was also declared a failure. Both efforts targeted DPP legislators representing Taipei City.

These setbacks bring the total number of failed recall efforts against DPP legislators to eight. Two other campaigns, targeting Su Chiao-hui (蘇巧慧) and Wu Chi-ming (吳琪銘), were called off before Sunday’s deadline.

Chang, the original convener of Wu Szu-yao’s recall initiative, had announced on April 30 that he was withdrawing from the effort. On Sunday, stand-in organizer Chan Chia-wen (詹嘉文) told media that many had hoped Chang would change his mind. After failing to reach him by phone, campaign members waited outside the election office until 5:30 p.m., when the deadline passed.

Recall organizers said they are now considering administrative litigation or other legal avenues to restart the petition process.

In the other case, recall leader Lee Hsiao-liang (李孝亮) said the campaign to oust Wu Pei-yi collected 19,830 signatures — falling short of the legal requirement. Despite the failure, Lee said the number reflected public dissatisfaction with the DPP.
