Bipartisan statement challenges China’s interpretation of UN Resolution 2758

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Members of New Jersey’s Taiwan Caucus issued a bipartisan joint statement Thursday in support of Taiwan’s participation in international organizations.

The statement was presented to Tom Chih-chiang Lee (李志強), director-general of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in New York, during the inaugural Taiwan Heritage Day reception at the New Jersey State House.

The legislators urged continued US support for Taiwan’s efforts to expand its global presence and criticized what they called China’s misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758, which they said has been used to block Taiwan’s international participation, according to TECO-New York.

The event was hosted by Senator Gordon Johnson and Assemblyman Robert Karabinchak, co-chairs of the New Jersey Taiwan Caucus, and celebrated the contributions of Taiwanese-American communities and commerce groups in the state.

TECO-New York said the friendship between Taiwan and New Jersey has “been growing steadily thanks to bipartisan advocacy.”

Lee said President Lai Ching-te’s (賴清德) proposal for a Taiwan sovereign fund would strengthen future Taiwan-US trade relations, per CNA. He also thanked Taiwanese businesses and local communities in New Jersey for helping deepen bilateral ties.
