Taiwan’s Ministry of Sports readies for launch

台灣體育署準備啟動

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – The new Ministry of Sports will open its doors on Sept. 9, National Sports Day, the government said Thursday.

Previously, sports issues and policies were dealt with by the Sports Administration, a department of the Ministry of Education. The Cabinet said Thursday that following one year of research, planning, preparation, and listening to public opinion, the new ministry is finally ready.

The government also presented the logo of its new department, which was inspired by Taiwan’s triumph at the WBSC Premier12 baseball championships in Japan last November. In one game, Team Taiwan Captain Chen Chieh-hsien (陳傑憲) formed a square with his hands in front of his chest after scoring a home run, symbolizing Taiwan, per UDN.

The logo also has the shape of the letter “S” for sports, the government said. The orange color represents the Olympic flame, perseverance, and honor, while the yellow symbolizes enthusiasm and speed.

The Ministry of Education presented the logo in a report to the weekly Cabinet meeting Thursday morning.

The new Ministry of Sports mission includes the organization of national athletic competitions, promoting sports to the public, improving the training and protecting the rights of athletes, and the professionalization of a sports economy. Promoting sports diplomacy and the Taiwan brand at international events is also a task of the new ministry, officials said.
