Lienchiang County launches limited expert-led night tours with transportation and exclusive gifts

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Matsu Islands’ iconic “blue tears” phenomenon made its first major appearance of the season Tuesday night.

Local reports confirmed that bioluminescent waves were visible and photographable along multiple coastal areas, including the Fuao region in Nangan and Mengao Harbor in Dongju. The glowing waters in Matsu are visible from April to September, with peak sightings typically occurring between April and June, per CNA and marie claire.

The display is caused by a species of bioluminescent plankton that emits a blue glow when disturbed. The annual flooding of the Min River brings nutrient-rich waters to the region, creating ideal conditions for the plankton to thrive, particularly when combined with the area’s moderate sea temperatures.

To promote this natural spectacle and Matsu’s star-studded night skies, Lienchiang County has launched a series of guided night tours, running from Friday through May 31. The program features eight sessions led by local guides, each offering a unique theme and perspective on the phenomenon.

Each 90-minute tour costs NT$100 (US$3) and includes guided interpretation, shuttle transportation, travel insurance, tour gifts, a multifunctional phone lanyard, and a handheld lantern. Attendance is limited to 200 people across all sessions, with advance registration required through the Accupass website.

Experts note that spotting the “blue tears” requires not only being in the right location but also visiting under the right conditions. The best time to view the bioluminescence is after midnight, between low and high tide, when factors such as clear water, calm seas, minimal light pollution, slow currents, and irregular coastal terrain improve visibility.

According to the Lienchiang County Government, the phenomenon can be observed across Matsu’s “four townships and five islands” during the season. Recommended viewing locations include Fuzheng Beach and Mengao Harbor in Dongju, Qiaozi, Qinbi, and Tanghoudao beaches in Beigan, the Iron Fort and Fuao Port in Nangan, and Zhongzhu Levee and the Northernmost Frontier in Dongyin.
