New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih and other VIPs release sky lanterns in Pingxi

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The 2025 New Taipei City Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival took place on Sunday, with New Taipei Mayor Hou Yu-ih (侯友宜) and other distinguished guests, including American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) Director Raymond Greene, jointly releasing a golden snake sky lantern symbolizing good fortune.

Afterward, an estimated crowd of 2,000 to 3,000 people released smaller sky lanterns. The event was held at Pingxi Junior High School, drawing attendees from across northern Taiwan despite the cold, wet weather, per CNA.

Participants included more than 50 international exchange students from 17 countries who released their own sky lanterns, adding to the event’s international appeal. A festival spokesperson said the gathering is not only a significant part of Taiwanese culture but also a testament to the creativity and vitality of all citizens.

Marianik, a French traveler visiting Taiwan for the first time, told CNA she was deeply moved by the sight of so many sky lanterns lighting up the night sky. She wrote a prayer for her family's safety on the lantern she released.

A second sky lantern release event is scheduled for Wednesday to coincide with the Lantern Festival. This event will be held at Shifen Sky Lantern Square from 6 to 9 p.m.
