Hsieh and Latvian partner Jelena Ostapenko move a step closer to Grand Slam event title
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s Hsieh Su-wei (謝淑薇) moved a step closer to defending her women’s doubles title at the Australian Open on Tuesday.
Hsieh and her Latvian partner, Jeļena Ostapenko, defeated Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk and Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 7-5. It was a close-fought, grueling match that earned Hsieh and Ostapenko a spot in the semifinals, per CNA.
They won three consecutive games at the start of the match, and then successfully broke the opponent's serve to gain the upper hand. After another fierce battle at the end of the set, they continued to force their advantage to win the first game 6-2.
In the second set, both sides continued to battle. The Taiwan-Latvian pair failed to hold their serve in the 11th game and lost the second set, 5 to 7.
Fortunately, the duo kept their resolve, and after two break points in the third game of the deciding set, they launched a counterattack to win 7-5. Next up, Hsieh and their partner face Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and New Zealander Erin Routliffe.
Hsieh, 39, has secured seven Grand Slam event women's doubles titles. This includes one victory in the Australian Open, two at the French Open, and four at Wimbledon. She also won mixed doubles titles at the Australian Open and Wimbledon, both victories occurring last year.
Hsieh is known for pairing with different doubles partners, including men and women. Throughout her nine Grand Slam event titles, her partners have come from China, the Czech Republic, Belgium, and Poland.
In the current Australian Open, Hsieh also competed in mixed doubles competition with Polish partner, Jan Zielinski. The pair did not make it past a second-round match earlier this week.
