Active cards increase to 38.91 million in November, cards in circulation down to 58.62 million
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Taiwan’s credit card transaction volume hit NT$4.26 trillion (US$129 billion) in the first 11 months of last year, an 11% year-on-year increase, the Financial Supervisory Commission announced Tuesday.
According to a press release, domestic bank transaction volume in November was NT$385.5 billion, the fourth highest month in 2024, per CNA.
However, November’s volume was NT$385.5 billion, down 4.77% from the previous month. FSC Deputy Director General Hou Li-yang (侯立洋) explained that the department store anniversary sales ending and reduced travel demand were the main factors, with only e-commerce performing strongly, per UDN.
As of the end of November, active cards reached 38.91 million, a 190,000 increase from the previous month. Domestic bank credit cards in circulation were 58.62 million, down by 40,000 cards month-on-month.
The card circulation decline was due to cancellations outpacing new issuances in November, with 575,000 cards canceled, exceeding the 522,000 cards issued. Hou said inactive card cleanup, driven by anti-fraud efforts, was the primary reason.
CTBC Bank remained the top credit card issuer in November with monthly spending reaching NT$67.63 billion. Cathay United Bank followed with NT$64.16 billion, and Fubon Bank at NT$53.06 billion.
